When I took a private Chef role in the USA, I was living in London. I had gone to a job agency that specialised in catering style roles and suddenly found myself at the end of a phone call to an American from New York, with a home on Cape Cod.
“Can you cook” was the first question and when I answered in the affirmative he moved on to his most important question – “Do you like dogs?”
That, that was of more interest to him, had me hooked.
I love dogs.
We have always had them around us, from the black Lab to the Collie when I was a child, to the 3 Golden Retrievers I called my own on Cape Cod, and many more since. But, without a doubt, I look back on those retrievers as my best friends, in the States. I adored them and literally had them all in my bed when I could. How I slept I don’t know, but in those days I probably didn’t care!
I have had large dogs, and small, rescue dogs, pet shop dogs and dogs sent up from the South Island by a breeder. They all come with their own personalities and they all make me laugh and make me mad. I have loved them all and missed them when they have gone.
Right now I have Saffron and Poppy Seed. However, I am sensible enough to call them Saffy and Poppy. They kind of have to fit into my life. We should only really have one of them, but one day we went for fish food and came home without the food but carrying a toy poodle. My nephew exclaimed to his mother, I have never seen a family so impulsive! I call it fearlessness!
I don’t think I could live without a dog. They are my excuse for walking every day. They force me to get fresh air and I love them for it. I chatter to them when I am home alone. Others think they hang by me with the ever hopeful anticipation of scraps that fall from chopping boards, yet I am convinced they love my oven as much as I do, and the warmth and aroma are a side benefit.
So when you love your 4 legged members of the family you need to look after them and give them delicious food, just as you would for your family. I stop short at cooking for them. Thankfully I didn’t have to cook for those retrievers either, though I cooked for my dog in Jakarta because I had no choice, and she needed nursing to health after massive abuse before we rescued her.
Now, I have discovered the Black Hawk range of pet food is coming to NZ I am super excited. Yes, OK so it may come from a breeder over the ditch, but hey you can’t dislike us all can you?
And this food is 100% real with no yucky fillers in it. I used a cheaper food once – even had it bulk delivered and I have never seen such an effect around my yard. So, I won’t go near it now. These guys have it nailed. Great food for the cutest members of the family, as if you cooked it yourself, BUT out of a packet.
I love it and Saffy and Poppy are ‘sitting’ and going ‘down’ and ‘rolling over’ for it. They are totally hooked.
So if you are like me and you really love to cook at home and you have a passion for dogs too I would so recommend you giving this a go. If you follow me on FB you will also be up for a chance soon to win some to give it a try. It comes in salmon, chicken, lamb or beef flavours – and that is the real deal – not just flavouring either!
