Caitlin is in High School in a special needs area with a fabulous bunch of kids. I met her when she was still a Primary student and she still totally loves to cook. Visiting her at school in Tauranga through a give-back event, thanks to G J Gardner Homes was a wonderful experience for all of us.
We stay in touch via social media and I love to see the photos she sends of the dishes and cakes she creates at home.
She so loved the visit that I made to her Primary school several years ago that she was hopeful I may be able to visit her in Tauranga at her High School. This was a brilliant trip and we spent the morning cooking with all the kids in the special needs department at the school.
The kids were so engaged and thrilled to be hands-on in their learning. Watching these kids handle knives, roll up vegetables into spring rolls and cope with hot oil as they fried them was a surprise for the teachers. Every special needs child cooked fried spring rolls filled with fresh vegetables and then had a chance to decorate a cupcake (or two). They then had a wonderful shared snack to enjoy together as we handed out certificates for their Fearless performances.
